Peterborough rejected Leeds player swap offer involving McCalmont

Leeds United have had a player swap offer rejected by Peterborough, their director of football Barry Fry has confirmed.

According to Peterborough Today, Leeds’ academy graduate Alfie McCalmont was offered out in exchange for one of the players at the Weston Homes Stadium.

However, the offer was rejected out of hand, Fry has said.

“Leeds offered to swap the player for one of ours and we turned it down flat,” Fry told Peterborough Today.

Success at Oldham

McCalmont spent this season on loan at Oldham in League Two.

He made 39 appearances in all competitions for them, scoring 10 goals and supplying five assists in the process as he shined from a central midfield position.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the 21-year-old because while he did well at Boundary Park, he did it at League Two level so a loan spell in League One must be on the cards next.

His contract at Elland Road doesn’t expire until 2024 so there’s still plenty of time for the Northern Ireland Under-21 international to make a mark in West Yorkshire.

But it doesn’t seem as though he’ll be able to do that at Peterborough.

It’s unclear whether Peterborough have only just turned down that player swap deal from Leeds or whether it was last summer, prior to McCalmont’s move to Oldham.

However, Peterborough Today’s report says that the Posh “have” rejected the chance to sign McCalmost, which suggests it’s fairly recent.

McCalmont might never be Premier League quality so using him as leverage to sign a player from Peterborough isn’t a bad idea. However we haven’t seen the Whites strongly linked with anyone from the Posh so who knows who it was they made a bid for?

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are set to finalise this major transfer in five weeks’ time.
