Perkins agrees personal terms to quit Leeds for good as West Ham update shared

Sonny Perkins has agreed to leave Leeds United on a permanent basis, according to Sean Whetstone.

Writing via his West Ham Football X account on Thursday (30 January), the journalist, who specialises on the Hammers, reported that Perkins, 20, has agreed personal terms to turn his loan stay at Leyton Orient into a permanent one.

Leeds signed Perkins from West Ham in 2022 after the striker rejected a new contract offer at the London Stadium, allowing the Yorkshire giants to sign him for an undisclosed compensation fee.

The former Hammers academy ace made four first-team appearances for Leeds with his one and only goal for the Championship leaders being a stoppage-time equaliser against Cardiff City in the FA Cup third round in 2023.

Leeds drew that game 2-2 and thanks to Perkins, they were able to win the replay 5-2.

Leeds youngster Perkins heads back to London with Leyton Orient

Perkins has already been on loan at Brisbane Road this season so Leyton Orient will know all about the young striker already.

He hasn’t played that much though, managing just 18 appearances in League One with only eight of them being starts.

Os manager Richie Wellens has also mainly played the young striker out wide, meaning that he’s only scored two league goals in those outings which equate to around 706 minutes of game time.

However, Perkins is still young.

While he does turn 21 next month, it’s clear that he’s not going to be making it at Elland Road any time soon and allowing him to leave permanently is a good move by Leeds, who’ll be cashing in on a young prospect who won’t be ready for them any time soon in the Championship – or the Premier League.

Leeds aren’t exactly blessed with amazing striker depth with Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph effectively Daniel Farke’s only options due to Patrick Bamford’s continual injury issues and Joe Gelhardt’s loan move to Hull City.

But even still, it’s better for everyone – especially Perkins – that he leaves now to pursue his career back in East London.
