Patrick Bamford suffers transfer heartbreak as deal blocked in cruel manner

Patrick Bamford’s search for a new club after being released by Leeds has taken an unfortunate twist.

Bamford was released by Leeds in the summer ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

He played just 18 times in all competitions for Daniel Farke‘s side last season, failing to score in any of those appearances.

Bamford‘s exit was no surprise at all, but the one-time England striker did look as though he was about to find a new club last month.

Patrick Bamford’s Getafe move collapses

In September, it was reported that La Liga club Getafe were closing in on a deal for Bamford.

However, news of Bamford’s move to Spain had gone a bit quiet until Wednesday, when Estadio Deportivo reported that the move was off.

According to the Spanish news outlet, Getafe manager Jose Bordalas blocked the move to sign Bamford on a free transfer, even though the club’s directors had been progressing towards striking an agreement.

It is understood that Bordalas “expressed his disagreement” with a deal for the former Leeds striker and halted negotiations “at the last minute”.

It’s a heartbreaking twist of fate for Bamford, who’s now been without a club for over two months and celebrated his 32nd birthday in September.

The ex-Middlesbrough striker is facing the twilight of his career and for someone who’s had so many injury and fitness issues over the last few years, a substantial spell without a club and without playing competitive matches is going to have a profound effect on prolonging his days as a player.

What now for Bamford?

Getafe are not the only club that Bamford has been linked with since his contract at Elland Road ended.

Wrexham have been linked with signing Bamford, while a move to MLS outfit Charlotte FC has also been touted as an option for the out-of-work striker.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News in July, Paul Robinson said he reckons a move to MLS will suit Bamford.

“Whether it be in the UK or not is another question. The MLS could potentially be a destination for him as well,” said Robinson.

“It is going to be a risk for whoever signs him. He’s going to have to take a wage cut wherever he goes. And it’s how hungry he is and how much desire he’s got to revive his career at his age and prove that he can still do it.

“The next move for him is going to be a test. Whatever you say, however you dress it up, somebody is going to have to take a risk on him.”

Leeds have won just two of their seven Premier League games since Bamford left Elland Road in the summer.

Farke’s men return to action on Saturday when they take on Burnley at Turf Moor in a 3pm kick-off.
