Newcastle United to ‘100%’ test water to sign Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville, £30m claim made

Newcastle have been tipped to “test the waters” by making a bid for Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville this month, according to journalist Conor McGilligan.

Speaking on his One Leeds Fan Youtube channel (3 January, 23:09), the ex Leeds-Live journalist was reacting to reports that the Magpies want to sign the Netherlands winger.

But while admitting that their financial restraints due to FFP could be a good thing for the Whites, McGilligan tipped Newcastle to make their move during the January window to test the 49ers resolve to keep hold of him.

“It’s a worry that it’s not a sort of Palace, or a Burnley or a Luton when it comes to Cree [Summeville],” he said. “It’s more of a worry for me when you’ve got a team like Newcastle coming in. Or a team like Liverpool or City or whatever.

“Because they’ve got the money. The beauty of this is the FFP when it comes to Newcastle. I believe at this moment in time Newcastle are going to struggle when it comes to FFP with what they’ve spent so far, which is a real benefit to Leeds because the 49ers have already shown they can knock back £15-20m when it comes to Cree Summerville.

“So are Newcastle going to be able to go to £25-30m? Can they even afford above £20m to keep within the restraints? Probably not.

“Do I think they’d test the water if they did want him? Yeah. 100%. 100%. So yeah, that is a little bit of a worry when it comes to Leeds.”

Must keep

The 49ers Enterprises group made their stance in the summer very clear when it came to selling the club’s best players, and they stood firm regardless of what happened around them.

They saw with Wilfried Gnonto that he would go to extreme lengths to push through a move but they made it clear that he would not be going anywhere, and he’s still here six months later because they stuck by their word.

Leeds United

Leeds have now made it clear that they’re not interested in selling the best players at the club as they’re pushing towards promotion to the Premier League, and there is arguably nobody more important when it comes that then Summerville.

But Newcastle are a different kettle of fish in the footballing world compared to the likes of Burnley and Crystal Palace who were linked in the summer, and his head is more likely to be turned if they do firm up their interest with an offer.

Hopefully the board keep their word and keep hold of the best players this month, but if Newcastle are serious then it’s going to be a long January.
