Newcastle United ready £33.7m bid to beat Leeds United, Everton to Goncalo Ramos signing

Newcastle United are wary of competition from Leeds United as they line up a bid for Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos, according to Journal de Noticias.

The Portuguese newspaper reported via their print edition on Tuesday (16 August, page 33) that the Magpies are getting ready to bid at least £33.7million for the 21-year-old Portugal Under-21s international.

It is understood that Newcastle are making a quickfire move to sign Ramos in order to fend off competition from Premier League rivals Leeds, Everton, Southampton and Wolves.

Leeds need to bid

Victor Orta should have the money available to him to make a move for Ramos after he failed to beat AC Milan to the signing of Charles De Ketelaere.

Leeds were widely reported to be ready to pay a club-record fee for De Ketelaere but the move reached a dead end, so there are clearly funds available.

Leeds need a new striker before the summer transfer window closes in just over two weeks’ time with Patrick Bamford getting injured yet again at the weekend.

Although Bamford should be fine to continue playing this week, it just shows how close the Whites are to another striker injury crisis like they had last season when they struggled to get goals all term.

Ramos doesn’t look as though he struggles in front of goal though.

He’s already scored four goals in four games this season and also supplied three assists.

On 2 August, he netted a hat-trick against Midtjylland in the Champions League to help Benfica progress to the qualification play-offs where they’ll face Dynamo Kyiv.

Ramos is also young at the age of 21 so fits with the profile of player Leeds like to sign and he’s been prolific for Portugal’s Under-21s, netting 14 times in 18 appearances.

Newcastle seem to be in pole position for his signature right now but the Whites surely have the means to be able to form a reasonable challenge.
