Neco Williams could leave Nottingham Forest on loan in January after Leeds United tried to sign him in summer

Leeds United tried to sign Neco Williams from Nottingham Forest in the summer, and he could now leave in January on loan according to The Telegraph.

Writing on their website (3 November), the news outlet report that the Whites wanted to sign the former Liverpool defender during the summer but he ended up staying at the City Ground.

But having made just one Premier League start this season he could now look to leave on loan for more regular football just 18 months after joining in a £16m deal.

“Scotland international Scott McKenna could depart amid a contract dispute while Neco Williams – a target for Leeds over the summer – may leave on loan to pursue regular game-time,” they wrote.

“Chelsea may recall midfielder Andrey Santos if he does not become a starter.”

Missed the boat

Full-back was clearly an area that Daniel Farke wanted to strengthen in the summer, and while Williams may have been a target back then it’s unlikely that he still is.

Luke Ayling and Junior Firpo remain from the options last season, while Farke has converted both Archie Gray and Jamie Shackleton to be options in the role and also signed Djed Spence on loan and Sam Byram on a free transfer to bolster the position.

With so many options, plus Stuart Dallas’ return hopefully not too far away, the chances of going back into the market for another full-back option are slim to none without an exit first happening.

Williams is capable of playing on both sides which would be a bonus, but bringing him in would mean we would have to offer him regular football and that could upset the balance of the squad which is currently doing really well.

It’s one to watch to see if it pops back up in the coming weeks, but it’s clear that the club were shopping in the Premier League to bolster their squad last summer.
