Mikel Arteta gives update on potential Leeds United target Eddie Nketiah

Leeds United-linked Eddie Nketiah will not be moving anywhere during the January transfer window, according to his manager Mikel Arteta.

The forward’s contract at the Emirates is set to expire in the summer and rather than lose him for free, a reduced fee could have been received this month.

On November 12, TuttoMercatoWeb reported that Leeds had enquired about re-signing their former loanee.

However, any interest before the end of the season looks to be futile with the Gunners boss giving a firm answer on a potential transfer.

Speaking ahead of his sides Carabao Cup semi-final with Liverpool (as quoted by Sussex Live) the Arsenal manager said: “The situation is that Eddie is our player and he’s going to stay here with us.”

Unlikely option

With Nketiah having previous experience with United under Marcelo Bielsa having spent five months on loan at the end of 2019 suggestions that he might provide an answer to the attacking injury crisis at Elland Road were unsurprising.

The young Englishman scored five times during his time under the Argentine and would have been relatively cheap considering his contract situation.

And with the number of injuries currently besetting The Whites, particularly in the forward positions, they could do with any help they can get.

Leeds were without Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts against West Ham last weekend and had to start teenager Sam Greenwood up front, who then himself reported picking up an injury.

However, it appeared the chances of Bielsa turning to Nketiah for a second time were unlikely, and interest from the likes of Crystal Palace also seems to have little chance of success after Arteta’s statement.

Whether it is a return to health for current players or transfer reinforcements, something needs to change soon for United who are stuck near the bottom of the table.

In other Leeds United news, the club are reported to be in “hot pursuit” of this Ligue 1 target.
