Melissa Reddy: Leeds United scouts in Lisbon to watch Benfica v Barcelona

Scouts from Leeds United were in attendance at the Champions League clash between Benfica and Barcelona on Wednesday night, according to Melissa Reddy.

The Independent journalist, who also works for Sky Sports and the BBC, shared the news via her personal Twitter profile during the Portuguese side’s 3-0 win in Lisbon.

“Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Leeds, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are amongst a lengthy list of clubs to have scouts in attendance at Estádio da Luz tonight,” Reddy wrote.

Who’s in their sights?

There were a whole host of talents showcasing their abilities during the clash between these two European heavyweights last night.

However, it’s fair to assume that most of the clubs, including Leeds, will have focused on the younger players on the field.

The only player Benfica had starting under the age of 25, though, was Darwin Nunez, and therefore we think the Uruguayan international may well have been the focus of attention.

Nunez only joined Benfica from Almeria in 2020, but he scored six goals and registered 10 assists in 29 league games while also netting five times in seven Europa League matches.

He has already started the 2021/22 campaign on fire, scoring four goals in five Primeira Liga outings, and it didn’t take long for him to impress in front of some interested onlookers on Wednesday.

Nunez struck in the third minute to hand the home side an early advantage over Barcelona, with Rafa Silva adding a second in the 69th minute.

But Nunez wasn’t done – he scored a penalty in the 79th minute to make the scoreline an embarrassing one for Barcelona.

It’s easy to see why Leeds could be interested in him.

Currently, Marcelo Bielsa only has Patrick Bamford as a senior centre-forward option as he routinely looks to start Rodrigo in midfield.

Bamford turned 28 earlier this month, and thus the Whites may be looking to the future and assessing their options.

If it was Nunez they were looking at, they will have liked what they saw.

In other Leeds United news, a journalist has suggested the Whites may look to offload this player in January if Marcelo Bielsa reduces his minutes.
