Medical soon: Leeds on verge of agreeing £13m deal to sign another new player - Phil Hay
Leeds United are on the verge of agreeing a £13million deal to sign Freiburg centre-back Robin Koch, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.
Writing on The Athletic’s website, Hay reported that Leeds are hopeful that they can get Koch, 24, into England over the weekend so that he can undergo a medical before officially joining Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.
Leeds are in the hunt to sign a new centre-back after losing Ben White at the end of his loan in July and Brighton’s refusal to sell the defender permanently.
Leeds have reportedly had three bids rejected by the south coast club and have now set their sights on Germany international Koch.
And it seems that Koch’s transfer to West Yorkshire is on its way towards being completed with Leeds hopeful of a medical taking place in the coming days after positive talks over the last 48 hours.
Koch would be a significant signing for Leeds.
Rodrigo has all but signed by Valencia in a club-record deal and Koch stands to become the second first-team arrival this summer.
Leeds have been busy adding to their youth options too with Sam Greenwood officially arriving on Friday from Arsenal to join Joe Gelhardt, Charlie Allen, Dani van den Heuvel and Cody Drameh also being snapped up by Victor Orta.
Koch could be the most important arrival of the summer though.
White was outstanding for Leeds last season and replacing him is unlikely to have been easy for the Yorkshire giants.
But Koch has all the attributes to be able to slot into the centre-back position alongside Liam Cooper for next season but there are concerns about his bedding-in period.
Next week, Koch will be training with Germany with two UEFA Nations League matches on the horizon – one of which against Rodrigo’s Spain.
It means that Bielsa might only have Koch for a week before the Premier League season kicks off and that might not be enough for the German to get fully up to speed with the Argentine’s system.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have tabled a huge bid for another centre-back.
