Medical scheduled as winner named in race for Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer amid Leeds United interest – David Ornstein
Leeds United are set to miss out on the signing of Cameron Archer from Aston Villa after Sheffield United agreed an £18.5m fee, reports David Ornstein.
Writing on his personal Twitter account (23 August), The Athletic journalist reports that the 21-year-old striker is set to undergo a medical before moving to Bramall Lane for the upcoming season.
Leeds and Crystal Palace were also interested, but a deal has now been agreed which includes a buy-back option for Villa that has seen the Blades win the race for his signature.
“Cameron Archer set to undergo medical at Sheffield United shortly ahead of proposed move from Aston Villa,” he wrote.
“Sheffield United close to agreeing £18.5m fee for 21-year-old. Deal would include buy-back clause to Aston Villa. Has also been interest from Crystal Palace and Leeds United.”
Shame
Archer is clearly a supreme young talent and his profile is obviously one that would shine in the Championship with the way that Daniel Farke wants to play.
But that fee for someone who is still largely unproven is crazy money in comparison to some options on the market and it makes sense that the Whites haven’t gone to that price.

It also explains the news on Wednesday that a move for Joel Piroe has been stepped up now and it makes sense considering he is likely to cost less than Archer and has a far more proven resumé.
This deal has clearly moved quite quickly too but ultimately Leeds fans will be annoyed at the idea of missing out on Archer more than the reality, especially if we are able to get someone else in ourselves.
The buy-back clause would also mean we don’t have control over his future, and with Farke’s comments on release clauses quite clear it’s probably best we leave this alone anyway.
