Max Wober too expensive as Leeds United transfer hope emerges
Borussia Monchengladbach cannot afford to meet the demands of Leeds United for Max Wober but could revisit the transfer, manager Roland Virkus has said.
Leeds have set a price tag of between £8.5million and £10million this summer, according to Kicker [29 May], which the Bundesliga club are unlikely to meet.
Daniel Farke expects the 26-year-old central defender to be part of the Whites’ squad next season after spending last season out on loan with Monchengladbach [Beren Cross].
Speaking to Rheinische Post on Monday (29 July), Virkus said: “Of course, we are watching the market. We cannot meet Leeds United’s demands and Leeds are not seeking a loan. That’s why the story is on hold for the time being.
“But we have always found good solutions – and players like Max Wöber sometimes come back on the market at the very end. Of course, there are also late decisions.”
Leeds United still to lose Max Wober this summer?
Leeds are very unlikely to sanction Wober’s exit later in the window, especially if the club have not found a suitable replacement for him.
Farke currently has Wober, Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk available to him in the centre of defence, with Ethan Ampadu able to drop back if needed, so the squad is already quite light in the department.
While the 26-year-old jumped ship after Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League, and the player has a lot of making up to do with the fans, he could play an important role next term.
The Whites will be keen to secure promotion back to the top flight at the second time of asking, having missed out to Southampton in the Championship play-off final, and defensive reinforcements will be needed.

Wober became an important part of Virkus’ set-up last season, making 27 appearances after leaving Elland Road, managing to maintain his spot in the Austria national team for Euro 2024.
Given his experience, Farke cannot afford to let the player go without a replacement, and a new purchase may only be possible with any money made from the defender’s departure.
