Max Wober shares transfer update as Tottenham star axed for Leeds defender

Leeds United look set to finally sell Max Wober this summer following their promotion to the Premier League.

The Austrian international joined the Whites from Red Bull Salzburg back in January 2023, but has since made just 28 competitive appearances for the club.

He spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach following Leeds’ relegation to the Championship, but has been back in West Yorkshire this season, only to be overlooked continuously by Daniel Farke.

Wober played just 332 minutes of league football throughout this season and desperately needs a move away to progress his career.

Wober doesn’t want to “rot away” at Leeds

Despite his lack of football, Wober has been part of the Austria squad for the recent internationals, and it’s provided him with the perfect opportunity to put himself in the shop window for any potential interested clubs.

With Austria’s captain, David Alaba, absent and Gernot Trauner suspended, Wober was preferred to Tottenham star Kevin Danso by Ralf Rangnick for his side’s victory over Romania in their World Cup Qualifier.

It was the first time the centre back has played 90 minutes since way back in December.

“I was extremely pleased that I was able to show other clubs that I’m fit, that I’m still a really good player, and that I don’t just want to rot away in England,” the Leeds man told Austrian outlet, Krone (8 June).

“There are no concrete future plans at the moment; the summer transfer window has only just begun.”

Selling Wober would help Leeds out elsewhere in the market

Wober’s situation at Elland Road is even less likely to change now that the Whites are a Premier League outfit once again.

Farke will know that he needs to add proven top-flight quality to his squad if they are to survive in the Premier League, and Wober will not be viewed as that by the German boss.

The defender’s lack of football this season will have hindered any potential transfer value that he did carry, but with several acquisitions sure to be needed this summer, the Elland Road outfit would surely be better to sell Wober and take whatever cash they can get for him.

Leeds likely won’t have the funds to splash out on a big-name target as a result of their PSR concerns, meaning they will have to be sensible with their business. As a result, if they were able to secure a reasonable fee for Wober, it could still be put to good effect.

The fact that Wober wants to move on can only be a welcome sign for Leeds, considering the fact there are some players who would be happy to sit on the remainder of the contract and eat up a wage which could be used elsewhere.
