Max Wober exit update emerges at Leeds United ahead of transfer deadline with deal in works
Borussia Monchengladbach are working on a new loan move for Max Wober from Leeds United, accordig to Marlon Irlbacher.
The Sky Sports Germany journalist reported via X on 24 August that the Bundesliga club want to bring the defender back on a second temporary deal, after he spent last season with them.
Wober, who hasn’t featured at all yet in the Championship under Daniel Farke, can see himself returning to Monchengladbach but talks have yet to be opened between the clubs.
The Whites boss revealed earlier this month that a chat in his office had “totally convinced” him that the 26-year-old wanted to stay this season [Yorkshire Evening Post, 8 August], having made a sudden exit last summer despite having indicated the opposite.
Daniel Farke convinced Max Wober wanted Leeds United stay
A year ago Wober would have probably been a key man in the Whites defence to start the campaign in the second tier but in his season away in Germany his stock has fallen at Elland Road.
Farke may have been convinced that he has bought in this time, but the YEP’s Graham Smyth expressed doubt over the Austrian international’s commitment on 8 August, in comparison to another returner in Brenden Aaronson.
That the American attacker has featured in all three league games so far and scored two goals potentially tells its own story, when Wober has seen just over an hour in the dismal Carabao Cup loss against Middlesbrough and most recently missed the Sheffield Wednesday win with an injury [Adam Pope, 21 August].
Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk are firmly entrenched ahead of him at centre-back, and Ethan Ampadu would likely also start ahead of him if Farke were pressed, while Junior Firpo has made the left-back spot his own.
So if Wober wasn’t convinced a year ago it would be no great shock if he jumped at the same opportunity to depart this time around.
However, unless there is an exit clause active this time, which seems to be a permanent risk with Leeds these days, a straight loan doesn’t seem to serve much benefit to the Whites.
If the defender was a disruptive influence behind the scenes they might want to get him out but there has been no indication of that being the case.
Either way the exit route appears to be opening again so the final days of the window could be busy in both directions at Elland Road.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have now missed out on an attacking signing they looked likely to make after multiple offers were made.
