Max Wober exit update emerges at Leeds United ahead of January
Max Wober moving to RB Salzburg from Leeds United in the upcoming transfer window is unlikely, according to Salzburger Nachrichten.
The newspaper reports in its print edition [18 December, pg 15] that the Austrian outfit will find it “difficult to realise” a move for the centre-back due to financial reasons.
Salzburg’s German sporting director, Rouven Schroder, is currently looking for a new manager after confirming the sacking of Pepijn Lijnders on 16 December.
Wober has been linked with a move back to the Austrian outfit, but despite the links with Red Bull, getting a discount on the price tag has been dismissed as a possibility [Peter Linden, 12 December].
Leeds United need Max Wober in squad
The Whites have an issue with a lack of squad depth, especially in the backline.
Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk have been Daniel Farke’s go-to centre-backs this season, but the German manager doesn’t have a lot of options as backups.
Wober returned to the Peacocks this summer after his loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach, but the 26-year-old has found game time difficult to come by at the West Yorkshire club due to fitness issues.
The defender started for Leeds in the Championship wins over Derby County and Middlesbrough but was dropped to the bench once again in the 1-1 draw with Preston on 14 December.

Farke also has James Debayo at his disposal, but the 19-year-old is still young and can’t be relied upon to be a regular first-team player.
Ethan Ampadu can provide cover in the backline, but the Welshman only recently came back from injury, and it remains to be seen how long it will take for him to get back to his best.
Wober is critical to maintain the Whites’ strength as they try to attain promotion to the Premier League.
In other Leeds United news, one star is likely to seal a permanent transfer from Elland Road next summer.
