Max Wober exit on at Leeds United as Euro club eye January transfer
Red Bull Salzburg are keen on re-signing their former captain Maximilian Wober from Leeds United in January, according to Salzburger Nachrichten.
The Austrian outlet reported on 29 November that Salzburg plan to bring Wober back to the Red Bull Arena, with current centre-back options Samson Baidoo and Kamil Piatkowski underperforming this term.
Salzburger Nachrichten’s report is corroborated by Sport Witness (30 November), who state that the Red Bulls, currently sat fourth in the Austrian Bundesliga, want to push the button on a transfer for Wober in January, having failed with a similar approach for the 26-year-old during the summer window.
Maximilian Wober transfer would be a mistake for Leeds United
Although Wober has struggled for game-time this season, largely due to a series of injuries, and last season’s loan move to Borussia Monchengladbach seeing him fall down the Elland Road pecking order.
He has, however, been able to show his versatility in defence despite just a few appearances so far, playing in both central defence and at left-back to provide Daniel Farke with different options.

As a result, disposing of such a player in January could come back to bite the Whites in the long run as they battle to get back to the Premier League – which is exactly where Wober wants to be.
The defender has already left Salzburg once to join United as a top-flight side, and with Farke’s side on track to and confident of becoming Premier League regulars, Wober departing would make little sense.
Just a few more months could see Wober become part of a Premier League defence once again, and Leeds can take no chances on any outgoing January transfers which may weaken their current position.
In other Leeds news, the Whites can steal a march on Europe’s elite by sealing the signature of a highly-rated 18-year-old star.
