Matt Targett transfer: Leeds United approach update emerges
Leeds United are not expected to make an approach for Newcastle United left-back Matt Targett this transfer window, according to Ben Jacobs.
The journalist reported via his personal X account (30 January) that a move in the winter window was off the cards despite reports that they had made an enquiry (The Athletic).
The Whites have been linked with a fair few players since the window opened with more rumours emerging as we edge closer to the 3 February deadline but Targett is seemingly not going to make the move to Elland Road.
“Understand Leeds United are not expected to make a bid for Newcastle left-back Matt Targett this winter,” Jacobs wrote.
Leeds United are looking lively in the last few days of the winter transfer window
After what has been a fairly quiet month for the West Yorkshire outfit, it now finally seems like Daniel Farke and Leeds are finally starting to look at making some transfers to bolster their ranks.
While Junior Firpo has now returned from injury, as the Dominican Republic international hasn’t yet extended his Elland Road stay with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it makes sense for Leeds to be weighing up their options.
Of course, they have the likes of Sam Byram and Max Wober who could fill in at full-back if needed but with the former entering the latter stages of his career and the latter seemingly being made of glass, it feels like left-back could end up being a problem area for Leeds if they don’t strengthen their ranks.

Targett – once dubbed “outstanding” by Newcastle boss Eddie Howe (Sky Sports) – has been out of favour for the Magpies this season as he’s only managed to make four appearances across all competitions.
Only time will tell if Leeds change their mind but if they do, they’d certainly be bolstering their defensive ranks and would be making another key step towards promotion.
In other Leeds United, it’s a done deal as Leeds agree a fee for a new goalkeeper.
