Matt Targett could head to MLS amid baffling Leeds transfer saga
MLS side Charlotte FC and Dean Smith could sign Matt Targett despite interest from Leeds United, according to Graeme Bailey.
The journalist reported via Geordie Boot Boys [31 January] that the Whites never made a bid for the Newcastle United defender, disputing Newcastle World‘s update of an enquiry being made.
It is understood that Daniel Farke’s side will not pay a fee for the 29-year-old left-back, with a move to America now on the cards for the former Aston Villa and Southampton defender.
“From what I understand, it was no more than interest from Leeds,” Bailey said, “They didn’t make a bid.
“They’re definitely not going to pay a fee for Matt Targett. He’s not an easy one to get out of Newcastle. We know Dean Smith at Charlotte FC still likes him, so that could be an option.
“And that could happen after Monday’s deadline as the MLS transfer window is still open.”
Matt Targett transfer off the cards for Leeds United
Leeds could do with another defensive signing before the transfer window slams shut, especially after a brand-new setback to Pascal Struijk, but Targett does not look to be the answer.
He has just one Premier League appearance to his name this season, playing just 28 times since making his move to St James’ Park permanent in June 2022.
While he has plenty of experience across the Championship and Premier League, Farke needs a figure who is ready to make an instant impact and help Leeds secure promotion back to the top tier.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi could very much be that player, having been linked with an Elland Road move this month [BILD], but there has not been any movement on that deal recently.
Many supporters will feel that their club has dodged a bullet after being linked with the rarely-seen defender, and they can finally rule out a move for Targett after the latest update.
