Mateo Joseph lined up for shock Leeds United exit as clock ticks to deadline

Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph could leave Elland Road before the 11pm transfer deadline on Monday, according to El Desmarque.

The Spanish news outlet reported on 3 February that Real Betis are working hard to sign a striker before the La Liga window closes at the same time.

It is understood that Columbus Crew striker Cucho Hernandez is the top target at Betis. However, El Desmarque claims Leeds’ Joseph, 21, is a back-up option for a last-ditch arrival.

Betis have reportedly been negotiating to sign Joseph “in parallel” with their deal for Hernandez.

Joseph has started just one of Leeds’ last 10 Championship matches and his goal off the bench against Cardiff City on Saturday (1 February) was his first since 18 October against Sheffield United.

Real Betis in late bid to sign Leeds striker Joseph

It would be a big surprise if Leeds were to allow Joseph to leave at this late stage of the winter transfer window.

At the time of writing, there are only five and a half hours left until the Whites are left with a long wait until the summer to sign any more new players.

Having already allowed Joe Gelhardt to leave on loan to Hull City and with Patrick Bamford injured, Daniel Farke only has Joel Piroe and Joseph to play up front.

Yes, he does have other options like Dan James and Brenden Aaronson who can slot in to spearhead the attack. However, what’s the point in putting square pegs in round holes when there are two pegs that fit?

Joseph is an exciting young forward and while he’s had a bit of a quiet run in front of goal, he’s allowed to have that when he’s only 21 years old.

The Spain Under-21 international can be a top talent and due to that, and the lack of other options up front, it would make no sense for Leeds to sell him now.
