Mateo Joseph Fernandez to sign four-year contract at Leeds in next few hours - Diego Balbontin

Mateo Joseph Fernandez is set to sign a four-year contract ahead of his move to Leeds United, according to Diego Balbontin.

The Radio Futbol journalist has reported that Marcelo Bielsa has decided to fast-track the signing from Espanyol straight into first-team training.

Fernandez is set to put pen-to-paper on the contract in the “next few hours” before making his move to Leeds official.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Balbontin shared more information with the signing set to be confirmed.

“Mateo Joseph (2003) is already in Leeds passing the medical,” he said.

“In the next few hours, he will sign a contract that will link him to Leeds for the next four years. Bielsa’s option is to join the first team training sessions this week.”

Brilliant news.

Bielsa must be confident of this signing given that he is prepared to throw him straight into training with the under-23s.

No signing gets the go-ahead without his approval at Elland Road, and a deal for Fernandez has been in the pipeline for many months now.

Victor Orta will be glad to get another gem through the door, but attention must now switch directly to more senior options for the first team.

Fernandez may be set to train with them, but he will surely be playing his games solely for the under-23s at first.

This is hopefully the first of many through the door, with the opening week of the window set to end with a real bang in West Yorkshire.
