Mateo Joseph approach made as transfer ‘rush’ begins at Leeds United

Mateo Joseph faces an uncertain future at Leeds United in what is a crucial end to the window at Elland Road.

Promotion to the Premier League means that the Whites have strengthened significantly and are still looking to do business.

Anton Stach is the latest outfield arrival at Elland Road as the Whites have bolstered the spine of Daniel Farke’s team, with Lucas Perri signing too.

However, with fierce competition, Joseph could be the next departure of note from the Yorkshire club.

Joseph in demand as Spanish clubs circle

Manuel Pellegrini has been keen to bring Joseph to Real Betis, where he would link up with former teammate Junior Firpo.

However, Joseph’s price is proving to be a sticking point for Betis, meaning another club has been alerted to his situation.

The forward scored three goals in 39 Championship appearances last season, but only 11 of those came as starts.

Now, fellow La Liga club Girona are “rushing” to get Joseph, according to SPORT (29 July, page 18).

The Catalan club has contacted Leeds to ask for the 21-year-old; however, in principle, they cannot pay the £12.1million demanded by the Pecocks either.

Like Betis, they could opt for a loan with a purchase option, or, in the worst case, a simple loan.

The Spaniard has three years remaining on his contract, meaning the Whites are in the driving seat.

Leeds United in a win-win scenario regarding Joseph

With considerable time remaining on his contract, there is no rush to get Joseph out the door.

If another club can meet the player’s valuation, then the Whites can generate a respectable fee, which could be injected back into Farke’s squad.

However, if he leaves on loan, then the Spain under-21 international can gain valuable first-team experience.

Moreover, if he were to enjoy a fruitful loan, then his value should increase ahead of a potential sale next summer.

Joseph may well still have a bright future ahead of him, and it is fair that Leeds do not want to let him leave cheaply.
