Manchester City told to send Kalvin Phillips back on loan to Leeds United by pundit after Champions League development

Gabby Agbonlahor suggests Kalvin Phillips should return on loan to Leeds United after playing just one minute of Manchester City’s Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

Man City signed Phillips, 26, for £45million in the summer transfer window but the England midfielder’s injury and fitness issues mean that he’s had very limited game-time for his new club.

He managed his third competitive appearance for the Premier League champions at the Etihad on Wednesday in their 2-1 win over Dortmund.

However, Agbonlahor wasn’t happy that Phillips played for just one minute when he came off the bench and has suggested he should be loaned back to Leeds for the rest of the season.

“Shame to see Kalvin Phillips getting one minute of playing time,” said Agbonlahor via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night (14 September).

“Can’t they loan him back to Leeds for the season?”

Obvious

Phillips was never going to be first-choice at Man City.

Rodri is one of the best holding midfielders in the world and there’s no real reason for Pep Guardiola to drop him in favour of a player who’s had nothing but injury and fitness issues over the last 12 months – even though he has been dubbed as “world-class” by Paul Robinson.

Phillips would have known that before he moved to the Etihad so it’s no surprise he’s going to find game-time hard to come by.

Would Man City loan him back to Leeds?

Have a day off, Agbonlahor.

Firstly, the January transfer window is months away from opening and a lot can change between now and the start of 2023 when clubs can make transfers again.

And why would Man City loan out a player they just spent £45million on?

Leeds fans would obviously love to see Phillips back at Elland Road but it simply isn’t happening.

And if Phillips is upset about only playing one minute against Borussia Dortmund, then maybe that can be a bit of a reality check for him.

He’ll get plenty of appearances under his belt once the upcoming international break is over, we’re sure.

In other Leeds United news, Andrea Radrizzani’s obsession can become smash hit at Leeds in January.
