Manchester City dealt new blow after deadline-busting Ian Poveda deal emerges at Leeds United

Manchester City have been dealt a new blow in the January transfer window as Ian Poveda nears a deal from Leeds United to Sheffield Wednesday, according to TEAMtalk.

The news outlet reported on 1 February that City would have been owed a sizeable percentage of any transfer fee received for Poveda, but since his contract runs out in the summer, he is likely to leave for free.

Poveda is nearing a deadline-day loan move away from Elland Road to join Sheffield Wednesday, choosing them over Birmingham City, and is expected to leave permanently ahead of his contract expiry.

The deal just never worked out

Poveda’s arrival from Manchester City was initially greeted with plenty of excitement. A flashy young winger moving to Elland Road from one of the country’s biggest clubs was only ever going to be promising, but ultimately the move didn’t work out for either party.

His move to Elland Road in 2020 saw him make just 25 league appearances for Leeds without scoring a single goal and with failed loan spells at both Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool taking place in his four years at the club.

This move to Sheffield Wednesday is likely to be his final loan away from Leeds, with his contract expiring in the summer and no new deal on the table, he could take a similar path to Luke Ayling in leaving when that deal runs out.

No fee received for Poveda would ever have been enough to satisfy the mega money on show in Manchester, but their sizeable sell-on percentage suggested there was once the thought that they might make some money from him, but they have now missed out.
