Lorenz Assignon to jet in from France to ignite last-ditch Leeds United signing of Connor Roberts
Burnley’s impending signature of Lorenz Assignon should set the wheels in motion for Leeds United to sign Connor Roberts.
That is according to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Joe Donnohue, who reported via X on Thursday (1 February) that Assignon is awaiting to fly over from France to join Burnley.
Donnohue added that a successful Turf Moor medical for the Rennes right-back will then allow fellow right-back Roberts to join the Whites.
One in, one out
It looks certain to be one in, one out at Turf Moor, with the Clarets looking like they will move Roberts on once Assignon has signed for the club.
The right-back was a regular under Vincent Kompany at the beginning of the season following the club’s promotion to the Premier League, but he has found minutes very hard to come by in more recent times.
It does seem strange given both his ability and the club’s struggles on the pitch that Kompany has not at least tried to utilise the player more often.
But that situation, and the impending arrival of Rennes defender Assignon at Turf Moor, will be warmly welcomed by all connected with Leeds.
Experienced full-back Robers has 53 Wales appearances to his name, and is certain to improve the club’s promotion hopes in the coming months.
The rapid transfer switch from the Premier League side certainly goes to show that top flight clubs can be brutal when it comes to buying and selling players, particularly when relegation back to the Championship is a real threat.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are hoping for the reset of one player as contract talks continue at Elland Road.
