Long-term Leeds United target Gary Medel set to join Elche
Gary Medel is on the verge of leaving Bologna to join Elche despite being a long-term target for Leeds United, according to Corriere Dello Sport.
The Italian newspaper reported via their print edition on August 25 [page 17] that Medel, 34, has “had offers” from clubs in the Premier League this summer and has been “long-sought” by Leeds.
It is understood that the Chilean enforcer is now set to jet out to Spain though to wrap up a deal with La Liga club Elche, where Kiko Casilla is currently on loan from the Whites.
That’s news to us
Medel has been a long-term target? We haven’t seen his name crop up once this summer or even last summer so it’s unlikely that Leeds were in for the Chilean midfielder in this transfer window.
Medel simply doesn’t fit the profile of player Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta like to sign.
Firstly, he’s 34-years-old. Why would Leeds want someone at that age who’s only experience of the Premier League was getting relegated with Cardiff City?
Secondly, he’s a defensive midfielder and we already have Kalvin Phillips, Adam Forshaw, Pascal Struijk and Robin Koch who can play in that role.
Medel’s an energetic, tough-tackling midfielder. He’s hardly the playmaker that Phillips is.
So much about this is odd and we’re sure that if Medel did have offers from the Premier League, he would rather head to England than join a team that could be relegated from La Liga.
Any team with Casilla in goals is likely to struggle and now Elche are also set to sign an ageing midfielder who’s past his best.
