Liverpool sources respond to transfer interest in Leeds United star Archie Gray

Liverpool sources have downplayed their interest in Leeds United starlet Archie Gray ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Neil Jones.

Writing on the CaughtOffside website (21 February), the reliable journalist reports that sources at Anfield have downplayed their interest in the 17-year-old midfielder-cum-right-back.

Jones went on to name youngsters already at the club such as Connor Bradley, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic, Bobby Clark and Tyler Morton before claiming the signing of Gray would be “unusual” considering how much it would likely cost.

“When you are 17 and playing at the level Archie Gray has been playing at, and on such a consistent basis, you are bound to attract attention, and Liverpool have been linked once again with the Leeds wonderkid,” he wrote.

“But Liverpool sources were pretty dismissive when stories appeared earlier this season suggesting the Reds were ready to spend big money on the teenager, and while he is undoubtedly a big talent, it is hard to see too much logic in such a deal at present.”

Leeds United’s gain is Liverpool’s loss

Gray is going to have an insane amount of interest in the summer window, especially if the club don’t get promoted to the Premier League, considering his performances this season.

Manchester City, Newcastle and Liverpool have all been linked with a move, despite Gray penning a brand-new contract at Elland Road earlier this year.

He has already proven himself to be capable of playing at the highest level, and his ability means he would at the very least command a place in the squad at those clubs if not the starting lineup.

Leeds United

Leeds will be hopeful that Gray’s links to the club with his family heritage will help them keep hold of him for as long as possible, while obviously Premier League football would go a long way towards convincing him Elland Road is the right place for him to develop.

But things will obviously be easier if bids aren’t received from those top sides, so Liverpool distancing themselves from Gray can only be a good thing for the Whites heading into the summer.
