Liverpool gem at Thorp Arch ‘as Leeds United eye transfer coup’

Leeds United have taken young Liverpool striker Oakley Cannonier on trial as the Whites assess his performances, according to Lewis Bower.

Reporting via his X account [27 January], the journalist Bower shared that Leeds have taken the 20-year-old on trial, with the Liverpool youngster on the bench for the Whites’ U21s against West Ham on Monday (27 January).

Cannonier had previously spent time with Leeds before making the move to Liverpool, and the Whites are looking to assess the striker before potentially making a swoop.

With the 20-year-old highly rated, he could be a shrewd pickup.

Leeds United need future-proofing

While the current goals are of course on achieving promotion and gaining success in the short term, the long-term future also needs to be acknowledged at Elland Road and signings like Cannonier would make sense.

The Whites have already showcased the strength of their academy with Archie Gray the most notable to have come through in recent years, and if they can keep adding to it, it certainly sets them up for an exciting future.

They’re typically low-risk investments with potentially huge rewards depending on how each player can adapt to the way of playing, and with Leeds showcasing their willingness to involve youth, they are certainly an enticing prospect for young players.

However, both long and short-term ambitions need to be aligned, and while Cannonier could be a good pickup for the future, Leeds need to act now to secure their Premier League status next season.

As things stand, the Whites are yet to add to their squad with time running out.

In other Leeds United, Fabrizio Romano issued an update on this Whites target.
