Liam Cooper transfer surprise emerges after Leeds United summer exit

Liam Cooper was close to joining Bolton Wanderers in the summer transfer window after his Leeds United exit, according to The Bolton News.

The outlet reported via their website (14 October) that before the defender chose to make the move to CSKA Sofia, a “surprise” switch to the League One side was on the cards.

Cooper left Elland Road as a free agent after a 10-year stint with the West Yorkshire outfit and decided to try his luck abroad rather than stay in England.

Leeds United could have done with Liam Cooper this season

There’s no denying that at the age of 33, Cooper is likely past his best by now which could have been one of the many factors behind why the Scotsman chose to leave Leeds.

However, due to the injuries suffered by new club captain Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev and Max Wober already this season, Daniel Farke has been left rather light in defence.

There were a plethora of clubs in the summer vying for the transfer of Cooper, with Hull City being among those [Yorkshire Evening Post, 26 August].

While he may not have been able to play for Leeds each week, he’d have likely been a safer option at the back than James Debayo.

After 10 years of service, it would have been nice to see him end his career with the club that he stayed loyal to for so long.

Things change, however, and with names such as Joyskim Dawa’s being linked with a move [The Mirror, 13 October], Cooper’s exit may have been the best thing for both parties.
