Liam Cooper agrees two-year contract with new club after Leeds United exit
Liam Cooper has agreed a two-year deal with CSKA Sofia following his Leeds United exit at the end of last season, according to Beren Cross.
The Leeds Live journalist reported on Monday (9 September) that the Scotland international is set to jet to Bulgaria on Tuesday (10 September) to put the finishing touches on his transfer.
Cooper is understood to have completed a medical in the UK over the last few days having reached an agreement with the Bulgarian First League side having been without a club throughout the summer.
Reports had suggested that the Whites were eager to keep the 33-year-old at Elland Road following the playoff final defeat to Southampton [Leeds Live, 7 June] but no agreement was reached on a contract.
Has Liam Cooper found a new club after Leeds United and Elland Road exit?
Most Leeds United supporters will have been surprised that it has taken this long for Cooper to find a new club, even after he played a much-reduced role in Daniel Farke’s side last season.
While the 33-year-old wasn’t quite at the level to start and play each and every week for the Whites last term, he certainly did still have enough quality to play for a Championship team competing further down the table.
But the Scotland international was clearly keen to secure a longer-term deal than what was offered in England and that has forced him to look abroad to find his first new club in almost a decade of football.
Hopefully, the final touches on the defender’s move will be completed without any last-minute hiccups so that he can finally get his career up and running once again after a difficult final year with Leeds.
Once the formalities of the transfer are completed and an official announcement is made, the Whites are expected to mark their former skipper’s service at Elland Road in some capacity which will be a nice moment for Cooper and the fans.
