Leeds United are interested in signing Reading midfielder John Swift but face competition from Sheffield United, according to Berkshire Live.
The news outlet claims that the Blades have tabled a £3.5million bid for the 25-year-old, who has been one of the stand-out players at the Madejski Stadium this season.
Swift’s form has attracted interest from Leeds as they plan for the likely life of being in the Premier League next season and Reading could be forced into a sale due to their financial situation.
Berkshire Live reports that the Royals could be forced into offloading players ahead of next season because of “severe” issues with their finances.
After what happened to Wigan this week, we do not want to see any more clubs going into administration but Reading have been living beyond their means and are now paying the cost for overspending by being forced into selling players like Swift, who looks as though he could be at least playing for a top Championship club.
According to stats by WhoScored, only Matheus Pereira [2.5] has averaged more key passes than Swift [2.3] per Championship appearance this season.
The Reading central-midfielder has also scored five goals and assisted 11 in 39 appearances across all competitions.
Marcelo Bielsa can be picky when it comes to signing new players so it remains to be seen whether or not Swift matches the Leeds manager’s strict requirements but we think he could be a good signing.
He might be a bargain too if he’s going for a price near to what Sheffield United have reportedly offered for him.
