Leeds United would send ‘horrendous’ PSR message with £50m+ Archie Gray sale

Leeds United would be sending a “horrendous message” if they were to sell Archie Gray for upwards of £50million this summer, according to Mark Douglas.

The teenager has been a key member of Daniel Farke’s squad at Elland Road so far this season, making 42 appearances in the Championship, scoring once and laying on two assits as the Whites sit second in the table.

Gray’s impressive displays haven’t gone unnoticed by teams further up the footballing pyramid and while Leeds could earn pure profit by selling the 18-year-old, i Journalist Douglas believes his sale would send a poor message to supporters.

Writing for i News on Wednesday (24 April) he said: “A potential sale of Gray – there is no valuation on a player Leeds don’t want to sell but he would surely bring in over £50m already – would be regarded as pure profit in PSR terms but would send a horrendous message about the future.

“Promotion would make that agonising dilemma an irrelevance in an instant.”

Will Archie Gray leave Leeds United and Elland Road in the summer transfer window?

It is only natural that teams would be looking at Gray ahead of the summer transfer window. The Leeds United gem has been in impressive form across a number of positions and has shown that he can be a force in English football.

While he is untested outside of the Championship, very few supporters or pundits doubt that he would be able to make the step out up to the Premier League. But the Whites must do all they can to keep Gray at Elland Road.

Talents like Gray don’t come around too often and it would be a shame to see him leave Farke’s side after just a single season. Leeds are in a position where they may need to sell their best players, but the 18-year-old shouldn’t be expendable.

Hopefully, Leeds will find a way to navigate both the PSR rules and keep their stars beyond the end of the season. Transfer talk isn’t going anywhere, but those behind the scenes at Elland Road will be doing all they can to tie down the likes of Gray and Summerville.
