Leeds United: Wilfried Gnonto trying to leave Elland Road this month amid fresh transfer twist

Wilfried Gnonto is trying to leave Leeds United during the January transfer window amid interest from teams including West Ham, according to Matteo Moretto.

Writing in Fabrizio Romano’s Substack update (19 January), the reliable journalist reports that the Italy winger wants to leave Elland Road during the current window.

West Ham are “expected” to sign the 20-year-old according to reports, but with a deal not done yet Moretto says Gnonto is actively pushing to get the move he wants.

“He wants to leave Leeds United, and there are teams interested,” he said.

“He was linked with a move in the summer, and tried to leave then, and he is trying to leave again during this transfer window.”

Here we go again

Another transfer window, and another period where all the talk is about whether or not Gnonto will be at the club at the end of it.

When it came to the summer the club were insistent that he wouldn’t be sold, even releasing a public statement to confirm as much and try to put the speculation to bed.

The player refused to play and train but he eventually apologised and was reintegrated into the squad by Daniel Farke, which he made clear at the time he wouldn’t do again if the situation repeated itself.

Well now Gnonto is looking to move again after limited game time, and it’s possible that Leeds are more open to a deal because of that with their priority being keeping hold of their best players like Crysencio Summerville.

It’s going to be a long end to the transfer window surely now, but hopefully we’re capable of keeping him as we need the strength in depth we currently have to be able to push for promotion back to the top flight.
