Leeds United watch Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres during 1-1 draw v Blackburn Rovers

Leeds United scouts were present to watch Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres during their 1-1 draw with Blackburn last week, according to the Daily Mail.

Gyokeres has scored 20 goals in the Championship so far this season, and is expected to earn a move to the Premier League during the summer window.

Leeds are one of several clubs said to be interested in a deal, and they’ve continued to keep an eye on the player as the window edges closer and the season draws to a close.

“Ewood Park was bristling with scouts last week as clubs got a closer look at Blackburn Rovers prospect Adam Wharton,” they wrote (24 April).

“Leeds, Lille and Eintracht Frankfurt also took the chance to watch Coventry’s Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.”

Plans in motion

Leeds need a striker in January, regardless of how the season ends up, but a Premier League standard goalscorer has to be the priority.

Gyokeres has shone this season with 20 goals in the Championship, and while achieving international recognition too with Sweden.

But this is a deal that Leeds will only have a chance of success in if they’re able to stay in the Premier League for next season, and that certainly isn’t a guarantee right now.

If we’re able to maintain our status then Gyokeres seems to be a prime target for Victor Orta to target with a price that is unlikely to be too high, but a player with the skillset to really improve the team.

There will be a lot of competition for his signature for sure, but Leeds have been strong in the transfer market for several seasons so there will be confidence this is another race they can win.

In other Leeds news, a European club are in contact with Leeds about a permanent transfer for the summer window.
