Leeds United want to sign Turkish midfielder Ozan Tufan before European Championship

Leeds United want to sign Fenerbahce midfielder Ozan Tufan before the start of the European Championship this summer, according to Fotomac.

The Turkish news outlet claims the Whites are expected to ‘knock on Fenerbahce’s door with a high price’ after the conclusion of the current Premier League campaign.

They may face fierce competition for him, however, with Spanish teams also reportedly interested in his signature.

Turkish journalist Talha Arslan also reported the news on his personal Twitter profile, claiming Leeds have been monitoring his progress since January and that director of football Victor Orta will make an official move at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old has scored five goals and assisted eight in 34 Super Lig appearances so far this season to inspire his side to title contention, with Fenerbahce five points off the top of the table with three games left to play. [WhoScored]

He also scored twice for his national team Turkey against Erling Haaland’s Norway in March, bringing his overall tally to nine goals and eight assists for club and country this season.

Tufan has adopted a number of different midfield roles for Turkey and Fenerbahce this season.

According to WhoScored his most regular position has been at the base of midfield in a more defensive role with 17 starts to his name there, while he has also started 14 times in the middle of midfield.

He has scored three goals in five starts as an attacking midfielder while he also filled in at right-back on one occasion.

This link has come out of the blue but looking at his displays in recent seasons allied to his impressive statistics, it’s a deal that could make a lot of sense.

Midfield has been a bit of an issue for Marcelo Bielsa this season with a number of absences, and Tufan could plug these gaps.

He could cover the holding midfield role if Kalvin Phillips is unavailable while his goalscoring and creative prowess proves he can be utilised further forward as a more dynamic midfielder.
