Leeds United want to sign Reading midfielder John Swift

Leeds United are battling a number of Premier League clubs in the race to sign Reading’s goal-scoring midfielder John Swift, according to The Star.

The report claims Brentford and Newcastle United are also interested in the 26-year-old as he enters free agency in the summer of 2022.

Swift, who rose through the ranks at Chelsea before making his Premier League debut in 2014, has been in terrific form for the Royals this season, scoring eight goals and registering six assists in 14 Championship outings to put Leeds on “red alert”.

Fine form

Swift has been on an electric run of form for Reading this season, showing his prowess in front of goal.

Only four players have scored more goals in the Championship than Swift this season.

Indeed, only Huddersfield Town’s Sorba Thomas has more assists than Swift.

He’s certainly someone who could slot into the Leeds midfield, with the Whites struggling to get goals from that area.

Stuart Dallas, Mateusz Klich, Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo have scored just two goals between them in the Premier League this season, and there have been calls to sign someone to challenge the quartet.

Swift has only had a brief experience of the Premier League, spending the majority of his career in the Championship, so there may be scepticism over whether his form can translate into the top-tier.

But were the Whites to sign him, they would be getting someone in the prime of his career who is playing with full confidence at this moment in time.

Indeed, if they wait until the summer, they could even land him for nothing.
