Leeds United want to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, official bid soon – Sky Sports

Leeds United want to sign Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow as they prepare for life in the Championship, according to Sky Sports News.

The Whites are expected to allow Illan Meslier to leave the club should they receive an acceptable offer, while Joel Robles was allowed to leave at the end of his contract in the summer.

Now Leeds have entered the race to sign Darlow, who was on loan at Hull last season, as he looks set to leave St James’ Park with an official bid expected soon according to Keith Downie.

“Bournemouth and Leeds United are battling it out to sign Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account (3 July).

“Boro [Middlesbrough] also showed interest but can’t match the wages.

“Darlow has two years left on his [Newcastle] deal and will command a fee.

“No official bid from either club – but will come soon.”

Experienced

Darlow is one of those strange cases when it comes to goalkeepers where he has been around for a long time but hasn’t got much game time in his career.

He is 32-years-old now and despite joining Newcastle way back in 2015/16 he has only racked up 100 appearances for them in all competitions.

The majority of those have come in the Championship too, and he impressed while on loan with Hull in the second half of last season.

Bringing him in for the club’s push up to the Premier League for the 2023/24 season will see a hungry goalkeeper step into the team, but also one with experience of playing at a high level.

It’s unlikely to be a fee that is too expensive and will allow the club to still bring in other targets too, but Darlow would be a solid start to the transfer window with around a month to go until the season starts.
