Leeds United want to sign Netherlands ace Cody Gakpo to replace Raphinha
Leeds United are hot on the heels of PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo as they think about potential replacements for Raphinha, according to FootMercato journalist Sebastien Denis.
Writing on the FootMercato website on 22 June, Denis reported that “an internal source from the English club” has revealed that Gakpo, 23, could be heading for Elland Road this summer.
It is understood that Leeds “will have no trouble paying for” the Netherlands international, who is valued at around £25.8million by PSV.
Denis adds that even though Arsenal have made a bid for Raphinha, Gakpo is someone who they might turn their attention to if they cannot sign the 25-year-old Brazilian from Leeds.
Gakpo was in seriously impressive form for PSV in the 2021/22 season, scoring 21 goals and supplying 15 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for the Dutch club.
In Europe, he scored against the likes of FC Copenhagen, Monaco, Real Sociedad and Benfica while in domestic football, he grabbed the winner for PSV as they came from behind to beat Ajax 2-1 in the Dutch Cup final.
Gakpo’s worn the captain’s armband at times for PSV, he’s been capped seven times by the Netherlands national team and he’s in seriously hot form.
If anything, we’re more excited about this transfer link than we were when Raphinha first emerged on the Elland Road rumour mill almost two years ago.
Victor Orta pulled a rabbit out of the hat to sign Raphinha and he’d do it again if he manages to snatch Gakpo away from PSV.
He’s a left-sided winger primarily but he can play on the right and as a striker. He’s right-footed too so he seems to be the opposite of Raphinha in terms of his position.
But that doesn’t mean we should ignore a player like this if he’s available for the right amount.
In other Leeds United news, this player has agreed a three-year deal to leave Elland Road.
