Leeds United want to sign Celtic star Matt O’Riley as Newcastle send scouts to watch him

Leeds United have “looked at” signing Celtic star Matt O’Riley this summer as Newcastle interest has emerged, according to The Chronicle.

Writing on their website (24 May), the news outlet reports that the Denmark international is a target for several potential Premier League clubs after an outstanding campaign which has seen him score 19 goals and register 18 assists.

That has seen the Magpies send scouts to watch him, while Leeds and Leicester have also had a look at doing a deal for the 23-year-old midfielder.

Leeds United signing Matt O’Riley would be incredible business

Creativity from midfield is always something that helps in the Premier League, and if Leeds are to get back there with a win over Southampton at Wembley then it’s something they’ll need to add to their team.

O’Riley has plenty of experience despite his young age having shone at Celtic in recent seasons, and he could add another trophy to his cabinet when he lines up against Rangers in the Scottish Cup final on Saturday afternoon (25 May).

That type of experience is vital for a team that will be battling to stay in the top flight next season if they’re in it, and that will make it very hard for Daniel Farke to be able to sign him.

A host of top teams are clearly paying attention too, so even as a Premier League team, it will be hard for the 49ers to pull off a deal of this magnitude.

But he will be all but guaranteed a starting berth at Elland Road, and it would be sensational business if they could pull it off.
