Leeds United want sell-on clause for Leo Hjelde exit, deal could be done within days

Leeds United want a sell-on clause to be included in the proposed transfer to take Leo Hjelde to Salernitana, according to Tutto Salernitana.

The Italian news outlet reported on 27 July that the 19-year-old is the Serie A club’s number one defensive target due to his ability to play either in central defence or at left-back.

It said the Whites are open to loaning the Norway U-21 international out, with an obligation-to-buy clause of more than £1.7million and a percentage of a future transfer included in the deal.

Time will tell

If Leeds feel that Hjelde isn’t going to break into the first-team fold any time soon and they can get a reasonable fee for him as well as profit from any future sale, then it makes sense to let him leave.

He hasn’t yet been handed the opportunity to prove his worth since signing at Elland Road from Celtic in 2021 at just 17 years old for an undisclosed fee, having made just two appearances for the club.

But the fact the Whites want to include a sell-on clause in the deal shows that they still believe he could go on to be worth a decent chunk of change in the future.

The left-back went out on loan and got valuable Championship experience in the second half of last season at Rotherham, where he made 13 appearances.

That could give Hjelde the confidence to go on and be involved in Daniel Farke’s squad for the upcoming campaign, but it looks as though the Leeds boss is instead looking to move him on.

Time will tell whether that proves to be a good decision or not if he does decide to sanction the move.
