Leeds United want Nathaniel Adjei transfer as player too expensive for rivals

Leeds United are interested in signing Hammarby defender Nathaniel Adjei in a deal that should cost upwards of £2.6 million, according to VoetBalkRant.

Writing on their website (21 November), the Belgian news outlet reports that the Ghanaian defender is available for transfer away from Hammarby for between £2.6m and £3.5m this January.

Several clubs are interested including Leeds, Rangers, Sunderland and Standard Liege, but the deal is likely to be too expensive for the Jupiler Pro League club which could give the Whites a boost in the race for his signature.

“The 21-year-old Ghanaian plays for the Swedish Hammarby and can be taken away for €3-4 million (£2.6m-£3.5m),” they wrote.

“Feasible for the purple and white budget. Standard is also interested, but it is probably too expensive for them.

“Adjei is a right-footed defender, but has already played a lot in the position of left central defender this season at Hammarby. There is also interest from England and Scotland: Celtic, Rangers FC, Leeds United, Sunderland, Queens Park Rangers, Middlesbrough, Preston North End and Bologna are all linked to him.”

Interest

Defensively Leeds have been in a good place this season, despite being handed a host of injuries in the full-back department in particular.

Djed Spence, Junior Firpo and Stuart Dallas have barely featured this season due to injury, while Jamie Shackleton and Archie Gray have also filled in as full-backs with Luke Ayling losing his place on the right.

In central defence Liam Cooper and Joe Rodon have had their own injury problems at different points, while Pascal Struijk just underwent surgery and Charlie Cresswell’s future is up in the air due to a lack of game time.

If Cresswell is to head out in January either temporarily or permanently, then someone will need to be brought in to fill the gap in the squad and Adjei could be that person.

Add to the fact that Cooper is getting on in age too, then this could be a shrewd bit of business if Daniel Farke wants him to join the squad.
