Leeds United: Victor Orta intent on signing Charles De Ketelaere from Club Brugge
Victor Orta is working on a deal to sign a new striker this summer with Leeds United “very interested” in Club Brugge’s Charles De Ketelaere, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.
The newspaper reported via their website on Sunday (26 June) that AC Milan are also keen on the 21-year-old Belgium international, who starred for Brugge as they won the 2021/22 Belgian league title.
It is understood that Milan will be able to outmuscle Leeds financially while the Serie A champions can also offer Champions League football to De Ketelaere.
However, the YEP adds that Orta has an ace up his sleeve as he attempts to sign the Brugge forward.
Journalist Graham Smyth says: “Leeds could not expect to match the Serie A champions financially and Champions League football could be key to the Belgian’s next move but what might stand in their favour is the significant game time that has helped propel the careers of Illan Meslier and Raphinha since their arrivals from Europe in the Premier League.
“The same level of involvement might not be guaranteed if he moves to Milan or one of his other Champions League suitors.”
Reeling him in
If you’re looking from the outside in, you can see why a move to AC Milan would be more favourable than a move to Leeds for De Ketelaere.
Milan have just won the Serie A title, they’ll be in the Champions League group stages next season and there’s obviously a lot of pull from one of the biggest clubs in European football.
However, Leeds have shown that they’re a great springboard for young talent emerging in Europe and that’s what Orta can use to try and convince De Ketelaere to head to Elland Road.
Right now, he’s bound to just look at the fact we finished 17th in the Premier League last season, we don’t have a big-name manager and our two best players are set to be sold.
But if De Keteleare plays regularly for Leeds – which he would because he’s a very talented player – and plays well, then he could expect to join a bigger and better club than Milan who might pay him more and might give him a more important role in their team.
Last season, the Belgium international scored 18 goals and supplied 10 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions for Club Brugge.
He’s extremely versatile but, according to transfermarkt, he played mainly as a striker while he could also slot into a No 10 role or move onto the wing.
Let’s face it, De Ketelaere would be perfect.
