Leeds United ‘very happy’ to lose Ian Poveda as contract claim made – Ben Jacobs

Leeds United were “very happy” to lose Ian Poveda in the winter transfer window, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

As per the official Leeds website (1 February), the winger has moved to Sheffield Wednesday on loan for the rest of the season.

Jacobs added that the Owls beat off competition from fellow Championship club Birmingham City for the signature of the 23-year-old.

“Ian Poveda is also on his way out and will join Sheffield Wednesday, and that will be a permanent signing,” Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT (1 February). “Only 23 and he joined from Manchester City with a big reputation in 2020.

“Leeds were very excited to see how he was going to develop. He played under 40 games and because he was out of contract this summer, Leeds are very happy to sell him. Sheffield Wednesday beat off competition from Birmingham to get that one over the line.”

Uncertain future

It remains to be seen exactly what Leeds have planned for Poveda, with the player’s Elland Road contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Veteran defender Luke Ayling left in similar circumstances earlier in the window, with the right-back joining Middlesbrough loan, with his Leeds deal expiring in the summer, meaning he has played his last game for the West Yorkshire club.

The Whites made that point regarding the right-back when announcing his exit [official Leeds website, 10 January], but no such comment was made when confirming Poveda’s switch to Sheffield Wednesday.

Jacobs seems to think that his time at Leeds has now come to an end, having moved to the Elland Road club from Premier League giants Manchester City in January 2020.
