Leeds United: Unnamed Champions League club causes Raphinha transfer twist

An unnamed Champions League club could throw a spanner into the works for Chelsea’s deal to sign Leeds United winger Raphinha, according to The Times.

The newspaper reported on their website on Thursday (30 June) that Barcelona are readying an offer to hijack Chelsea’s move for the 25-year-old Brazilian by lining up their own bid of around £51million plus an extra £8.6million in add-ons.

It is understood that Barca hope Raphinha’s desire to move to the Nou Camp will be enough to convince Leeds to accept.

However, in a new twist, an unnamed Champions League club is also entering the Raphinha discussion as the ex-Rennes winger looks to have his future resolved before Leeds jet out for their pre-season tour of Australia after he returns to training at Thorp Arch on Monday (4 July).

Saga rumbles on

It remains to be seen who this Champions League club is but we assume it’s another club on the continent and not another team in the Premier League.

It has to be one of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus, doesn’t it?

We doubt that anyone other them would come close to being able to afford Raphinha or be able to lure him to their club.

Raphinha has been set on Barcelona for a long time so if they do come in for a bid for him – and that’s a big if – then we assume that he’ll push Leds towards accepting that bid.

It presents an issue because it might mean the Whites get less from Barca than they would from a Premier League club due to financial issues plaguing the La Liga club.

However, it won’t be nice to see him playing against us in the Premier League so we’d kind of rather him head to Barca, even if it meant the club lost out on a few million quid.

Ultimately, this needs to be sorted out as soon as possible for the benefit of everyone.

Leeds need to start kicking on with signing a replacement and Raphinha will want as much time to settle in at his new club.

It just remains to be seen who that club will be after this latest twist.

In other Leeds United news, this player is due to undergo a medical ahead of leaving Elland Road for good.
