Leeds United turn to former Chelsea player as concerns raised over Gabriel Gudmundsson
Leeds United could be set to sign a replacement for Gabriel Gudmundsson before the end of the winter transfer window.
The Swede is suffering from an adductor issue, which could leave the Whites short in the left-wing back area.
Daniel Farke floated the idea of bringing in cover for Gudmundsson during his press conference ahead of his side’s trip to Everton in the Premier League next Monday.
It comes after Jack Harrison left Leeds to join Fiorentina on loan until the end of the season, with the Italian outfit holding an option to buy for £6million.
Leeds consider Ben Chilwell as wing-back cover
Leeds have had an extremely quiet winter transfer window so far, making just one senior signing this month.
Facundo Buonanotte made the move to Elland Road on loan from Brighton after returning from a disappointing six-month spell at Chelsea, where he struggled for game time.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, Leeds are targeting former Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell, as they look to strengthen their options out wide.
Chilwell, who is currently playing his football for Strasbourg in Ligue 1, would come in as backup and competition for Gudmundsson in the left-wing back role.
The Englishman has made 12 league appearances for the French side this season, and has started each of their last five games across all competitions.
Chilwell move has huge advantage for Leeds
Leeds are eight points clear of the Premier League relegation zone as it stands, and are looking good to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
Farke’s side have been in superb form over the last two months, turning their season around and moving away from the bottom three.
Their current crop of players would likely be able to keep them in the top flight, without any further additions, but the Chilwell deal cannot be ignored.

The 29-year-old has made 177 Premier League appearances across 10 seasons in England, and that sort of experience could prove invaluable to the Whites in their survival push.
Chilwell has also played in a back five for a lot of his career, so would have no issue slotting into Farke’s system at left-wing back.
