Leeds United transfers: Manuel Benson deal off after Vincent Kompany talks held, will stay at Burnley

Leeds United will not sign Burnley winger Manuel Benson before the January transfer window closes after he held talks with Vincent Kompany, according to Sacha Tavolieri.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (30 January), the Belgian journalist reports that the Burnley manager has convinced the winger to stay at Turf Moor until the end of the season at least to help aid them in their battle for survival.

The player has agreed to stay, and after a move to Southampton fell through earlier in the window any potential transfer to Leeds is also now off as well.

“Vincent Kompany spoke to Manuel Benson, convincing him to stay a Claret (at least) until the rest of the season,” he wrote.

“Player’s totally focused and will be involved to maintain Burnley in the Premier League.

“After Southampton FC, Leeds United now OFF.”

No surprise

It always seemed like a bit of a long-shot transfer, especially considering it was initially reported to be a deal that would see Wilfried Gnonto sold and replaced.

But Gnonto then agreed a new contract at Elland Road and any exit talks were essentially ignored, meaning the need for a replacement didn’t exist.

With the club reportedly interested in signing a new winger this month the option of him coming in was still a suggestion that could be considered, although it made little sense.

There has been plenty of interest in the winger this month and a move away from Burnley in the summer now seems to make more sense, and Leeds could potentially return then once they know their fate for next season.

But Benson will be staying at Turf Moor now and Leeds will not be signing the winger this month, so fans can forget all about this happening.
