Leeds United transfer twist over Georginio Rutter sell-on fee to Hoffenheim after Brighton exit

Leeds United won’t pay extra cash to Hoffenheim as part of Georginio Rutter’s move to Brighton, according to Nancy Froston.

The Athletic journalist reported via X on 19 August as the French star’s exit was confirmed by the Whites that the £40million fee will not see a percentage sent to his former club.

The Elland Road star’s late move to the Amex after the Seagulls triggered his release clause looked set to be less lucrative than hoped when Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany reported on 17 August that as much as €7million [£5.92m].

However it appears that will not be the case. Rutter follows Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray in making Premier League moves this summer after exit clauses were triggered.

Daniel Farke loses third Leeds United star to Premier League

Ultimately it is no cause for celebration that Rutter has gone this late in the window but it is a small silver lining that the money brought in will not immediately be reduced.

Daniel Farke has now seen his top two attacking stars depart late in the summer after Summerville’s switch to West Ham.

Archie Gray’s exit to Tottenham may have been made up for with the signing of Jayden Bogle at right-back from Sheffield United, as well as the immediate return of Joe Rodon from Spurs.

But three games without a win to kick off the campaign, with six goals conceded and two games without scoring, shows that the situation at Elland Road is anything but on track.

Farke now wants four key signings made before the transfer deadline [The Athletic, 16 August], yet the expected replacement for Glen Kamara after his move to Rennes [Leeds Live, 13 July] is still missing for a start.

Jonathan Rowe emerged as the main name to fill the gap by Summerville but the Norwich ace has also not arrived, despite Marseille and Monaco leaving the door open for the Whites to win the race [Santi Aouna, 13 August].

And now Rutter will need replacing too when there is less than a fortnight to get all that work done just to even leave the squad on a similar footing to last year.
