Leeds United transfer news: Tyler Adams £20m release clause expires before transfer window shuts – Phil Hay
Tyler Adams’ £20m release clause at Leeds United is time limited and expires before the transfer window closes, according to Phil Hay.
Writing on The Athletic’s transfer blog (14 August, 21:30), the journalist revealed that the USMNT’s captain is a target for Bournemouth after his deal at Chelsea collapsed.
But Leeds will be hoping a deal doesn’t happen too quickly as there is still a chance that they are able to hold onto him or claim a higher fee after a certain time.
“Bournemouth are exploring a deal for USMNT and Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams,” he said.
“The 26-year-old’s proposed move to Chelsea collapsed last week despite the Premier League club being set to trigger the £20million ($25.5m) clause in Adams’ contract following Leeds’ relegation to the Championship.
“Adams, who played 24 times for Leeds last season, suffered a hamstring injury that required surgery at the end of March and has not played since.
“The release clause in his contract is time limited and does not run right to the end of the window, which has alerted other clubs to his availability.”
Wow
That’s quite a revelation for Leeds fans to find out so late into the window, and for it to come to light so late on too.
Most fans were under the impression that Adams was probably going to have left by now anyway such is his quality and standing in the game, and the fact his fee is so low.

His injuries have caused issues though clearly and while Chelsea pulled out of a deal to sign Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo instead, that has alerted other clubs to the fact he’s open to a move away.
Should a deal happen then Leeds would have to react quickly to replacing him with that £20m that comes in, but the 49ers have made it clear they want to keep him around if they can.
It will be very interesting to see how this plays out, and if an actual date of expiration comes to light for this release clause it will allow fans to breathe a sigh of relief if it comes and goes without any news.
