Leeds United transfer news emerges as Ben Johnson branded ‘one to watch’ in West Ham contract update

West Ham defender Ben Johnson has been branded “one to watch” in the January transfer window amid interest from Leeds United, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reported via their website on 18 January that, while he is liked by Leeds, Johnson could be set for a run in the side at West Ham which could open the door for new contract discussions.

Johnson’s current deal is set to expire in the summer, and if he can impress during the next run of fixtures, it could be decisive for his long-term future in East London.

Leeds should act fast on this one

While it may well be Johnson’s intention to remain at West Ham for the long haul, and that decision could come down to whether or not he can impress those at the top in East London, Leeds should be in his ear trying to convince him that a move to Elland Road would be best.

The club are looking for new full-backs in the transfer window, with a right-back emerging as a priority position following the exit of Luke Ayling, which would allow Johnson to insert himself into the side as the first choice.

17-year-old Archie Gray has been the main option for Daniel Farke in that position, despite his natural and preferred role being in midfield, so if Johnson were to arrive at Elland Road he could make the position his own and allow Gray to return to the middle of the park.

It looks like it may take some convincing, but if Leeds could get a deal done before Johnson is allowed a run of games at West Ham, this deal could be on the cards before the window closes on 31 January.
