Fabrizio Romano: ‘Here we go’ soon for Leeds United to sign Djed Spence from Tottenham

Leeds United have reached a £1million agreement with Tottenham over the loan signing of defender Djed Spence, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer expert reported via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday [29 August] that it is now down to the player to green light the move.

Should Spence put pen to paper at Elland Road as expected, Leeds will pay a seven-figure sum to Spurs to help cover the 23-year-old’s wages.

Big upgrade

Spence arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a £20m deal in July 2022, but he has made just four Premier League appearances so far, totalling around three minutes on the field.

The right-back was loaned to Ligue 1 side Rennes at the end of January and started seven times in Ligue 1 before the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

Despite a change of manager at Spurs, Spence’s pathway to the first team is still blocked, so he is now set to drop down a tier to play – he hopes – more regularly for Leeds.

The last time Spence played in the Championship, he was named in the Team of the Season for his displays at promotion-winning Nottingham Forest.

Leeds United

Given his previous success in the division and the fact he is a £20m player, Daniel Farke will no doubt hope Spence is able to quickly settle and dislodge Luke Ayling at right-back.

It could be quite the upgrade for Leeds, who have seriously replenished their squad over the past week and are continuing to do so in the final stages of the window.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are reportedly ready to pay £10m for another of their targets.
