Leeds United: Pundit stunned by Tottenham stance on loan star Joe Rodon
Carlton Palmer says “there is no way” Leeds United will consider paying Tottenham £20million for defender Joe Rodon.
The Wales international has impressed since arriving at Elland Road from Premier League side Spurs on a season-long loan in August.
A report by TEAMtalk on Tuesday (14 November) suggested Tottenham would be willing to sell Rodon to Leeds for £20m next year.
However, Palmer insists that figure is way out of Leeds’ price range as long as they remain in the Championship.
“There is no way Leeds would pay that amount of money at present for a player who is untested in the Premier League and that amount of money would be rich for them,” he told Football League World [17 November].
“Should they remain in the Championship, that would still be too rich for them. I can see why Spurs are asking for that type of money for Joe, having given £11 million for the player in 2020, signing him from Swansea City.
“He’s approaching his prime at 26, and it’s likely they will get that money back for him, but I can see them getting their money back on an undoubted talented player. I can see them getting £11, £12 million back for this player.”
Surprising
Given Tottenham were supposedly after £50m for Rodon in the summer [Phil Hay], this can be considered quite the bargain.
However, as Palmer says, Leeds are not in a position to be spending a further £20m on a player as long as they remain outside of the Premier League.
Should they earn promotion this campaign, though, with Rodon playing a key part at the back, then this is a deal they should seriously pursue.
If that does not happen, Rodon’s future will be uncertain to say the least. It is likely Spurs will find the highest bidder for the centre-back.
It was surprising that the Lilywhites loaned out the Welshman in the first place; even more so now in hindsight with their defensive crisis.
Even if he is only in West Yorkshire for one year, Leeds must make sure they take full advantage of having Rodon in their ranks.
In other Leeds United news, a Whites starlet has opened up on a “very hard” decision he had to make over his future.
