Rennes are stepping up their pursuit of Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville in the transfer window, according to Foot Mercato.

The French outlet reported (28 July) that Rennes have "activated" their pursuit of Summerville in recent days, as well as that of 19-year-old Corinthians forward Wesley Gassova.

While it's unclear if Wesley is seen as Rennes' alternative to Summerville, the French side reportedly believe the Brazilian is "just as attractive" a proposition.

The Whites are holding out for £30-40million for star wideman Summerville in this transfer window [Fabrizio Romano, 19 June], with the Dutchman having attracted significant interest across the Premier League and Ligue 1.

Leeds United price tag may prevent Crysencio Summerville transfer

Few sides seem keen to splash out £40m on a winger from England's second tier this summer, despite Summerville's form throughout last season showing that he belongs at the highest level.

Had the Peacocks won promotion by beating Southampton in May's play-off final, Summerville would be back at the highest level once more, but defeat consigned United to another year in the Championship.

Archie Gray's £40m move to Tottenham earlier this summer has allowed the Whites to hold most of the cards in the window so far, but they've not been opposed to sanctioning other profit-making transfers.

Rennes have already signed Glen Kamara from Leeds United so far this summer

One of the best examples of these is Glen Kamara's transfer – to Rennes no less – for £6.8m, and the French side spending big on Summerville would also result in a healthy profit at Elland Road.

However, financial bookkeeping matters far less to United's fans than performances and output on the pitch, and given what we saw last season, there's no player they need to keep more than Summerville.
